Triangle Woodworkers Association (TWA) is hosting this full day seminar. Frequent Fine Woodworking contributor Tom McLaughlin, of Epic Woodworking will simplify the art of fine chairmaking, which is considered by many to be the most challenging of woodworking projects. Demonstrations will cover Queen Anne to contemporary chair designs.
The presentation will begin with an explanation of the fundamentals using a classic mortise and tenon Craftsman style chair. Then Tom will show how the principals involved in building this chair extend to the more curvilinear Queen Anne style. Finally, he will explore chairmaking design and construction in the style of one of a modern-day masterpiece, the Hans Wegner Classic (round) Chair. There will be time made for Q & A throughout the day.
Tom apprenticed in the early 90s with Master Craftsman P.A. “Pug” Moore of Rocky Mount, NC. Over his 30+ year career he has designed and built a myriad of custom pieces for clients seeking to own pieces that are as much a work of art as they are functional. As a 25-year member of the New Hampshire Furniture Masters, and former Chairman, his work has become recognizable for its dramatic use of figured wood, creating a sense of movement in each piece. Tom can be seen on repeat episodes hosting Classic Woodworking with Fine Woodworking on PBS TV, and he’s a frequent contributor to Fine Woodworking Magazine.
In 2016, Tom shifted his focus from commission work to teaching on his Epic Woodworking platform. He and his wife Kris enjoy furthering the craft by providing resources and instruction for all levels through a free weekly livestream called Shop Night Live on YouTube, Online courses and In-shop classes at his shop in Canterbury, NH.

The monthly meetings feature presentations by skilled crafts people from our general area as well as one or two nationally recognized professional woodworkers per year.
You're invited to attend this month's regular meeting as a guest featuring Tom McLaughlin. The event on March 29th will be at a changed time, for this date only, from 4 to 6 PM at Klingspor in Cary. Tom will do a presentation on “Grain Graphics.” He will explore various ways of handling and thinking about wood grain in order to enhance the visual impact of our projects. Photo examples and technique demonstrations will be included while considering creative directions using solid wood, veneers, and several finish treatments.
