In a box lot with some sushi knives and other sharpening gear was this waterstone.

It is fairly hard and gold/yellow in color. It will put a mirror shine on an edge.

Any idea as to who made it and what grit?

Might be a Takenoko stone. Check out japaneseknifesharpeningstore.com for their yellow/clay 8000 Takenoko water stone.

Was given info that this is a honing stone made by Naniwa and is likely in the 3000-4000 range. I did find an online image that seems to confirm that.

if nothing else, i'd post it on the neanderthal forum at sawmill creek. There's a couple of folks there who really know their stones quite well and could probably assist you.
