Cutting down HSS planer knives

I need to buy some spare planer knives for my new planer. Unfortunately, it's not a very common size (15.25" x 11/16" x 1/8"). I did find the right size HSS knives at a good price at Holbren - but 3" too long (i.e. 18") knives. Does anyone see a problem with shortening the knives by scoring...

How to Bend HSS?

Lathe tools HSS or CS

I have some Robert Sorby wood lathe tools that are probably 20 years old. I do not believe them to be HSS but am not sure. All that is stamped on the blade is "Robt Sorby Sheffeld". My question is this: can I tell from the color of the sparks I see when sharpening the tool if it is HSS or just...

Source for HSS for making turning tools

Does anyone have a good source for M2 HSS for making their own turning tools? I remember reading some posts about this earlier, but I can't find them now. Any help would be appreciated. :-D
