    Woodworker's drill press?

Just for the sake of discussion - what kind of woodworking do you envision that requires a $2000 drill press? I recently bought a Bauer 17” floor standing for $500. I’m using it for consistent/accurate/repeatable holes for staked furniture legs and so far it’s doing everything I need it to do...

You still need to steam before bending

My place is steamy enough just being outside. HAHA. I’ve seen articles/videos of people using a wallpaper steamer into a box for bending. Looking at your setup makes me wonder if a wallpaper steamer would be adequate.

What to look for in a Hand Plane?

I may step on some toes, sorry, that’s not my intention. I’ve been looking for user planes for the last couple of years with very few results. At a huge flea market (Wednesday’s in Pickens SC) I’ve found only one for sale. Antique stores have either missing parts or so much rust that I don’t...

    Chair building

I’d like to hear about your wood sourcings. Do you start with riving from green logs or with kiln dried material? What are your favorite woods for Windsor chairs? Also- how do you drill the angled holes in the seat? By hand or with a slant board on a drill press? Or something else? Is...

Expensive morning/ right of passage I suppose

Curious - has anyone tripped their SS with a body part, i.e. actually avoided an injury?

Project w/ Pics Half moon winding sticks

They look pretty cool and the LAP blog really likes how they work. I can’t seem to find my half circle drill bits, how would you cut out those moons? I guess as long as the small bevels and the top edges were straight they would work as described no matter how rough the moons are.

    Bench Grinder Suggestions

No no, I’m still here, trying to digest all of this information. Thanks for all the input, I have learned a lot but no simple answer’s jumping out. Like everything else it’s probably going to cost me more than I expected. Right now the Rikon is on top of the list waiting for a sale price or...

    Bench Grinder Suggestions

I’m progressing in my hand tool journey to the point that I need to start regrinding some edges. And I’ve accumulated quite a few “ clunkers” in my search for decent hand tools. What would be a decent grinder to buy? I’m thinking cheap as possible and spend some money on upgrading to decent...

    What are you making?

Working my way through Schwarz’s ADB on my way to making some chairs. Really eye-opening to find out how poor my fundamental basic hand tool skills are (sawing, drilling, planing/sharpening). Also learning a lot about Durham’s wood filler and milk paint (I.e. fixing mistakes). But I think that...

    Scrub Plane Help

Thanks everyone for some good information. Seems like the Stanley 40 is the least popular option. I have a Stanley 4,5, and 6 and a Keen Kutter 6, and some extra blades, but I really don’t want to modify the mouth of any of those. Today I’m playing some more with a cheapo Buck Bros 5 to see if...

    Scrub Plane Help

So I’ve made a lot of progress on my hand plane journey, thanks to a lot of information on this forum and a few helpful enablers. I’m pretty comfortable with flattening and smoothing rough lumber and want to get to thinning heavier stock. My understanding so far is that a scrub plane is the...

Where do the bugs come from?

I probably have way too much lumber for “future projects” stockpiled and taking up space in my shop. I’m thinking about moving a lot of it into another outbuilding to make some more room for actual woodworking. On a few occasions I’ve seen slight evidence of some kinds of infestations, some...

    Seeking input on shop heater

Some great suggestions. Lots of folks are happy with the mini split but that’s not exactly a “budget” solution. My shop is standalone, 12x16, T111 siding with a tin roof. Nothing worked for me until I insulated the ceiling under the tin. That made the biggest difference for heating. I put...

Porter Cable Dovetail Jigs - 4210 and 4212

I’d like to bump this back to the top. I’ll be traveling Greenville SC along I85 to Cary/Raleigh next Wednesday for a few days and would be happy to bring this with me. And I’m pretty flexible on the pricing so make an offer if you’re interested. PM’s appreciated Thanks

Robots vs Power Tools vs Hand Tools

I make the distinction between “having” and “doing”. The things that I make are very often not something that I need to “have” but rather I enjoy the process of making them using hand tools, the “doing”. (Woodworking as in “working the wood”). It would be a nightmare for me if I had to build...

    10/4 Quarter sawn white oak

When I open that map I just get a plain Google map with my favorites and starred places, no sawyers or other items show up. Any idea what I’m doing wrong? Thanks Claus

    Need a couple of 2x4's

If you move up to anything 2x6 or wider you’ll likely get southern yellow pine, much better quality wood than standard 2x4’s. I’ve been buying wider SYP and ripping 2x4’s out of that.

Looking for advice on repair of broken figure

No advice as to what glue but I’ve had good luck gluing cracks by blowing air at the glue through half of an ink pen. Blob some glue on the crack, take the pen apart, blow air from the middle section through the hole that the ball point sticks through and you can get a good amount of glue into...
