Need Advice To build or not to build....crib

I built a changing table for our first grandchild. This is something they can use now, and then later by removing the changing pad box for use as a dresser. Here's a post on the piece. If you do build a crib I'd suggest finding plans to follow. There are a lot of safety rules these have to...

    June 2025 Contest

Lots of good entries in this month's contest. I'll throw my tool restoration into the ring as well. This is a Stanley 346 miter box, before and after. The 12 TPI saw was part of the package.

    Sliding stopped dovetails

Michael, this post is already in the "How-to Forum" section. Is there something more you'd like me to do? I'll look back through the pictures of the router plane to see if I have enough for how-to. I built it several years ago.

    Sliding stopped dovetails

LOL... I bought a paint bucket full of assorted brass plumbing parts at an estate sale for $2. I still pick through it whenever it comes to making a new tool. In part I'm cheap, but mostly I just like recycling/repurposing objects.

    Sliding stopped dovetails

Perhaps, if you had the right sort of shop. There's a little bit of everything that goes into making one of these, basic woodworking, turning and metal work. The metal work, in particular, requires some small files, taps and dies, heat treating, etc. I agree there would be some individual...

    Sliding stopped dovetails

Thanks. I made it from cherry, some dark, hard wood (sole) and mostly plumbing/cabinet hardware for the brass. The iron is made from a 7mm allen wrench.

    Sliding stopped dovetails

Dovetailed joints have always fascinated me. They are such a simple concept, and get used in a variety of ways to great effect. Previously I've documented how I make a mitered dovetail joint and full blind mitered dovetails. This post is about making a sliding dovetail joint that stops before...

My new LN 10-1/4 rabbet plane

Pretty much for the intended purpose... wider rabbets. I have a Stanley #78 that is about 1" wide. The LN 10-1/4 is 2-1/8". The bedrock design is also way better when it comes to adjusting the iron, IMHO. I'm sure I will probably use it as a smoothing plane when it's already on the bench.

My new LN 10-1/4 rabbet plane

I've ordered multiple times from him. The tools always arrive well-packaged and in good condition. Another plus is that the price you see is what you pay... taxes and shipping are included.

My new LN 10-1/4 rabbet plane

I've been trying to snag one of these for a couple of years. Most of that time they were out of stock. There was a brief window (< 1 day) when they were available from LN but I wasn't quick enough to place my order. Finally, one came available on Michael Rouillard's site. It's barely used...

    Full blind mitered dovetails

That's the video I referenced in my original post, above. He does a great job of illustrating each step.

    Recently completed project: Bee hives

Nice Aaron! Glad to see you are getting into beekeeping. I had hives until a few years ago and enjoyed making my own hives. Keep us posted on how it goes.

piles of tools and project parts?

I built a small tool cabinet that fits over the tool well on my bench. It organizes the small tools I use most frequently and keeps them easily within arms reach. My bench also has a split top (sort of like Roubo's design). I made inserts that section off the split for various tools. You can...

    My new old mallet

Great questions, Roy. I had many of the same when I first held it. The handle may be slightly oval, but not by much (likely due to the small amount of wood shrinkage due to grain orientation). The shaft that goes through the head is round. I believe the handle was turned on a lathe...

    My new old mallet

I bought this mallet at an estate sale a few months ago. It was interesting and at half-price I figured there wasn't much to lose. I'd give it a try and sell it later if it didn't work for me. Brought it home, threw it in a drawer and forgot about it. It's an odd shape with a small handle...
