Re: Upside To Polar Vortex
We should politicize all science and engineering. Before building a bridge we ask Frank down at the carwash what he thinks. Well get Carl over at Food Lion to give us a hand with the next satellite launch, and Mary is a nurse but has big opinions about electrical and building codes. I mean skill and education mean nothing these days, Ana White is just as good a designer as Maloof.

Lots of us here are old enough to remember the last time we listened to the "experts":

Re: Upside To Polar Vortex
And the experts were right. We stopped using CFCs and the ozone hole is shrinking as CFCs dissipate.
Look, years ago I spent 6 months studying just enough climate science and reading abstracts to make up my own mind. You are welcome to believe whatever you want but if you are only reading denier articles and searching for gotcha articles to fight internet battles that is not education and not skepticism. Cheers.

Re: Upside To Polar Vortex
Actually, the reason we outlawed Freon, the primary CFC in the battle, was because patent protection was running out and the newly patented substitute had been miraculously discovered.
The underground use of Freon worldwide continues today. Production went crazy in the final years before the ban, and it was stockpiled all over the world. What that means is that there is no way to determine when it was no longer being used, just when it was outlawed.

Re: Upside To Polar Vortex
The now banned "Freon" is just one member of the chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) used as refrigerants, but there are other CFCs which are more environmentally friendly.

Re: Upside To Polar Vortex
Plenty cold, but not as bad as Illinois and Minnesota.
In the Rougemont/Roxboro/Oxford area we had 2-3 days with highs barely above freezing and overnight lows in the mid-teens. With the wind chill the real feel temperatures were even worse.

Re: Upside To Polar Vortex
I kind of doubt it got cold enough, long enough to put a dent in the NC EAB population.
Here in southern IL, we had a lot of rain, then a little snow, then it got cold very quickly. I never heard an ice quake before until the vortex hit us. Really strange to hear and feel the ground make a gun shot noise and feel it move slightly under your feet. We we're under a flash freeze warning. First time for that warning also. I found out a flash freeze warning is just what is says... Everything freezes in a flash#ArmOurTeachers
