Craigslist find...things aren't always what they appear

So I saw this ad on CL Friday....and I'm interested.

    Screenshot_20190105-172727_Chrome.jpg

I've been looking a type 11-ish #7. I believe these had been listed on CL before...at $150 each. I called the poster, a nice older lady who had no idea what she had but was going on what a "friend in the business" told her regarding value. We chatted and eventually got to her bottom price ...$180. I figured no harm in riding to Plymouth ....about an hour away and I know a few hot-spots over that way as well.

The pic is vague but I thought the other two were newer and I wasn't interested in those.

    Two hours and $110 later....

A really nice type 11 #7 (1910-1918) , a rough but decent type 11 #5 ( the pic fooled me on that one) and a very nice type 16 #4 (1933-1941, early I think given the SW iron). I was surprised at the other two, especially the #5. It needs a tote and the lever cap is wrong, but I have a spare period correct cap. The frog adjuster screw on the frog had been sheared off, but I have a spare period correct frog as well.

After a light cleaning Just the way I like them.....original. No chips, cracks, or breaks anywhere.

    Spare frog....

After sand-blasting and a good pressure wash on the other two...

A little epoxy paint and they'll be ready to go...

    Excellent score.
I know you believe you understand what you think I said, but I am not sure you realize that what you heard is not what I meant.

If anyone is interested, search "hand plane collection" and use Statesville as the location. 70 planes for $1250.

    Great save Chris!

Nice. I bought a #4 & 5 Bailey/Stanleys at an auction a few months ago. Watched a video on youtube from Woodpecker on refurbishing them. Been making lots of shavings!
