    Tough Weekend

This weekend reminds me that experience is the great teacher. After spending too many hours building a utility cabinet for my Akro-Mils parts drawer cabinets, I learned that 1/8" is important. The parts drawers absolutely would not fit into the cabinet. Once I was convinced it could not be made to work, I grabbed some 1x8s and made one that fits well in about two hours.

Ah, you measured once, cut once, and didn't have a board stretcher handy!

So it would seem, but that's not exactly correct. I measured multiple times, but measuring is not always as straight forward as it appears to be, particularly for irregular surfaces. Moreover, when you only leave 1/16" to spare, sometimes things slip. That's the part that should improve with practice.

The second version is installed and working as anticipated. Now what?

    Re: Tough Weekend

So, when I do multiples like that I cut a guide stick that fits between the shelves, set the first shelf, clamp the guide stick, set the next shelf, etc. no measuring, less chance for mistakes. Or if cutting dados for the shelves to fit in, same idea; use a stick to set the distance I move the board each time instead of measuring the distance.

Probably won't make much sense until you try it and think about ways to use block/sticks instead of measuring.

    +1

I use this all the time.... Way easier than measuring.
