    UPDATE-Hollows and Rounds

I am a little tired of working on the New Port Townsend Bureau so I have been spending some time finishing up a half set (12 pairs) of H & R's. All are quarter sawn beech and have 01 tool steel irons.

Very nice, David. Busier than a beaver I see!
I like making things. I have a wood shop at home. I am a terrible carpenter but I love doing it. Raymond - Charlotte, NC

    Re: Hollows and Rounds

That is awesome David. Thanks for sharing. If you ever decide to teach a workshop on that subject I'd step in line for that. I have a half set that I have rehabbed but have broken the ice on making a set. It is however on my bucket list of things to do.

Ah that's so awesome. I just rehabbed a set and it was so much work... can't imagine actually making one! How do you go about making the arc on the sole?

    Re: Hollows and Rounds

Richard: For the rounds it is pretty easy to plane down to a pencil line for the radius you are working with (marked on both ends). For the hollows I run the plane across a table saw a number of times getting close to the arc line and then finish with dowel rods wrapped in sandpaper.

If you plan ahead you can make the hollow first and use it to finish the round after faceting it with a plane. Again use sandpaper between the two surfaces.

There are 3 great DVD's on the market about building side escapement planes. Larry Williams of Old Street Tools, Tod Herrli of Marion Indiana, and Bill Williams that teaches regularly at Roy's shop in Pittsboro, N.C.

    Re: Hollows and Rounds

I'd love to try to make some (although I do have a good set of John Moseley & Sons H&Rs, from 2 to 18 evens), but the key tool to make them is a good set of plane floats, which I see you have. Source?

    Re: Hollows and Rounds

    Rob:

I purchased the Tod Herrli DVD for making the side escapement planes and in that video he shows how to make two floats used for plane construction.
Lie nielsen also has now started making floats and I think both Larry Williams and Bill Anderson use LN's tools.

    Hope this helps.

    Re: Hollows and Rounds

    Update As Of 11/11/2018

The half set plus (12 pairs) is now complete. All woodworking is finished. Two coats of garnet shellac have been applied. All irons have been heat treated and tempered. Some still need to be honed but I plan to do that as I need each size for work.

Also included in the pictures are some other planes I have built.

Edit: I just realized that a stack of hollows and rounds should have the bottom surfaces facing out so you can see each planes profile.
