    Missing lock parts

Either I am losing it, or the world of door lock makers are losing it.

Had to fit a door dead-bolt and handle to my new shop door. Off to Lowes and purchased a nice Schlage set with both dead bolt and handle in one box. Come to fit it, the machine screws that hold the two parts (inside and outside) of the dead bolt are missing. Return the package to Lowes and go look at the others on the shelf, same thing, those screws are not in the package for this one particular assembly.

Decide to change brand, this time Kwikset. Purchase dead bolt and handle separately. Fit the dead bolt and the strike plate is missing. Look at the package instructions and it clearly shows a strike plate as part of the package contents. Finished this time, but had to go back to Lowed to purchase a strike plate.

Yup, that's good old quality control. I don't think there is any anymore.

That's unusual in my experience for major manufacturers wherever you get them.

I might expected that at a place like Big Lots but not Lowes.

Was it a returned item? I've seen people buy light ballasts only to find a previous cusstomer (misspelled deliberately) had bought a ballast and returned the OLD ballast in the new box. Some people. And yet, the SA didn't check the box, or wasn't allowed to.......

Nope, brand new unopened, packaged by the manufacturer.

    Re: Missing lock parts

I think you were unlucky. I've put in 3 exterior and at least 9 interior locks, Kwikset, purchased at Lowe's or Home Depot within the last several years and I did not have missing hardware on any of them.

I agree about looking to see if merchandise has been opened. I bought a 5 quart jug of Castrol synthetic at Walmart a couple weeks ago so I could change oil on my BMW. When I went to use it, I found it had been opened and there was less than 4 quarts in it. The car had no oil in it at that point and I did not have a replacement. So I used it plus a quart I had and it was full enough. How crummy. I bought another one so I would have some on hand and to refill the quart bottle I carry on the vehicle. How crummy. My n52 motor needs about 6 quarts on an oil change. I think somebody who needed more than 5 quarts like me bought two, used all of one and a little of the other and then returned the remainder of the other. I will check from now on. But it isn't super easy, it's hard to see the level in the store.

Unscrew the top and look. If the top comes off easily the seal has been broken and the container has been opened before.

Be careful in the supermarket too. Ever since opening a tub of cheese and discovering that someone else had eaten out of it in the store and put it back on the shelf, I lift the lids on cheese, butter, yogurt....you get it.

    Re: Missing lock parts

Checking is a good thing...Christmas eve several years back, wife takes some Tylenol out of a brand new bottle. After swallowing, she realized that there was no tamper seal.

Just to be safe, that’s a trip to and long stay in the emergency room.
