    NCWW, general

    Type of Help Needed: Other
    Where: Main Site

Why is NCWW so slow this morning? Also, I occasionally get a "Safari can't open the page". I'm not sure if it's my ISP or NCWW, but other stuff seems to be working fine.

    Thanks.

    Re: NCWW, general

Our hosting provider was definitely having problems this morning (Sunday) and had other problems on Saturday. Hopefully this is behind us and we can move forward with uninterrupted service.

Our admins and web-master are investigating the source of the problem, but it is definitely a problem at our hosting provider.

I thought it was a problem on my end but pages from other sites loaded ok. Sounds like someone spilled syrup in the hosting provider server.

Sorry about the provider's troubles, but this does offer an opportunity to recognize, and thank, all the work done by our admins and others in making this a great site.

    Thanks to all,

Glad it seems to be fixed, but considering the host provider, and our administrators' record, I think they have done a remarkable job. Thank you to them for their hard work and dedication for giving us this important and enjoyable website.

    Re: NCWW, general

I’ve finally had a chance to see the behavior myself (not that I doubted the reports). If what others are seeing is the same as I have been encountering over the past hour then the server itself is not being affected during the outages but rather it is our respective connections to the server — the load on the server during the outage is fairly negligible, as it should be this time of day, but you will still see an unresponsive, or intermittently responsive, server.

I had been curious as to whether the server itself was being overwhelmed either by an external attack or an ill-behaved search engine slider (it happens — if it were I would have added a firewall or web server rule to block the source), but there is only light demand on the server during these periods nor is the server being starved for resources. Basically what is happening, so far as I can determine, is that our internet connectivity at some point between our homes, the national backbones (specifically those connecting us to Texas, where our server is located), and our server provider is becoming severely congested resulting in excessive dropped packets for periods of time — perhaps a hacking or denial of service attack on some other third-party server that is overwhelming the system as coordinated denial of service attacks can consume terabits/sec, or greater, of backbone bandwidth. If the outages are occurring on the National backbones, as opposed to the “final mile” at either end then both we and our web provider are between a rock and a hard spot as there is not much practical that can be done from either end (at least not without someone spending a large sum of money to significantly diversify their backbone connection points).

This is not the first time that connectivity between the southeast and Texas has suffered resulting in intermittent outages, and likely will not be the last. Sometimes it is caused by hacking or denial of service attacks directed elsewhere but passing through a given backbone provider that is also serving our individual traffic, other times it may be some viral site that suddenly became insanely popular for a period or a fault in the fiber-optic backbone(s) itself due to a line cut or other incident or even an attack on the backbone routers and their all-critical routing tables. Usually they are intermittent and resolve after awhile but they are very annoying when they affect you, but in most cases if you just wait awhile and try again a bit later you stand a good chance of getting in even if it is inconvenient.

If it is a national backbone or edge router issue then don’t be surprised if each of us is affected at differing moments in times — it’s not uncommon that someone from Raleigh, for example, might not be able to get in while members outside that immediate region get through just fine, and vice-versa, as we all take slightly different routes to and from the server and those routings often evolve and change throughout the day. As a result different groups of us will often be affected at different times so don’t be surprised if you see postings that were made during a period where you could not even get into the server, that just means those members were not affected at the same time as you because their traffic was, in that moment, traversing a slightly different route than yours so they were unaffected during the same period.

    Re: NCWW, general

It's happening again. I'm beating on our host provider now.

    The last message was:

    > This is to let you know that we are migrating your servers to new DC and this
    > will take some time to complete it's process. Sorry for the inconvenience
    > caused. Our team is currently updating new settings and your service will be
    > back to online once this is done.

Of course, they didn't bother to tell us what they were doing. Their support is being way substandard of late.
I'm not convinced this explains the problem however.

No job is worth doing unless you can get a new tool out of it.

Ethan's explanation might explain why I was getting limited bandwidth messages while watching Amazon Prime Video at lunch time.
