Big leaf maple ...what is a good finish?

I have several pieces of big leaf maple that I'm looking to turn some bowls out of. Having never worked with this wood, what is a good finish for a bowl of big leaf maple? My blanks are 6x6x2 for the most part. Thanks for any suggestions.

It's a West Coast maple that's similar to red maple (soft maple) on the East coast. What have you used on past maple turnings?

What is the proposed use of these bowls? Going to hold objects, be decorative, be used for salads, cereal, etc. You would need some finish or else fingerprints show up over time. Danish oil looks nice but doesn't build up so no shine. Wiping varnish like Waterlox give a good protective finish and get a nice shine. Lacquer would probably be quickest. If they are going to be gifts, shiny things are more impressive.

I have waterlox (if it's still good) that I could try. The turnings will probably be more decorative to hold stuff.

    Waterlox or shellac will work.
