    Rabbet plane box completed

Today I finished a project that started two years ago. A tool box to hold my rabbet plane and all its accessories. It started as just being for that tool but then I decided to also add my large router plane and all of its accessories as well including the supplemental fence. I made a small box in fall of 2016 to hold the accessories of both tools just to keep them from getting lost. But I still needed to make a box for the two tools. I didn't use them as often as other tools so I didn't want them taking up space (and weight) in the dutch chest. Last year's big project was the chest of drawers for the tool chest so the rabbet plane was delayed. At the beginning of this year I started on it again but then broke my arm, delaying the project longer.

The final box is a storage location for the many additional planes that don't get used as much nor need to be in the Dutch Chest. Planes include spokeshaves, bullnose shoulder, trim, large and small router and of course the rabbet. I left space for two additional spokeshaves and a standard shoulder which I don't own.

The case is done in a briefcase style. I had a hard time finding any plans for a suitcase type tool box so I had to make it up on my own. It is held together with dovetails on the corners and a piano style hinge holding the two sections together. I made one major mistake in letting the end of the hinge hang out so that the suitcase doesn't sit flat on its bottom due to the hinge butt. Not sure how I could get around that as I wasn't sure what size of hinge to get. In fact I bought two. The sides of the case are 1/2" pine so I didn't have a lot of room to play around. Lessons for the future I guess.

Case with tools inside. I used different techniques for holding the tools in place including pivot turn styles, magnets and in the case of the box, a sort of wooden key into slot on removable wooden fence.

The small box that contains the accessories to the router and rabbet planes.

    Box standing on its bottom.

The case was sized exactly to fit inside the same cabinet that the dutch chest fits in within my laundry room so it doesn't have to live in the humid garage. Both fit nicely and the doors shut with an inch or so to spare.

Before this all completed I will apply shellac to the outside of the box and may paint a landscape on either or both sides of the box to give it a little more flavor.

Nice case, that should protect your tools for a long time.

I should mention that like most of my projects this was built entirely with hand tools.

    Richo, Very neat case.

Resting the case on it’s hinge would really bug me.

You could install some buttons/feet on each half of the case and use a forstner bit to drill a recess on the opposite side of the case so there’s room for the foot when the case is opened up.

That's a good idea. I was thinking of something like that or a base to rest it on in the meantime. The base would be a flat surface with a groove for the hinge. Bottom line redoing the hinge would screw up several other things including the front clasps so that's out.
