So this prompted me to look at the NCWW's mission statement. Is it on the website somewhere? I haven't found it yet.

This is in the bylaws under downloads --> corporate documents

PRIMARY PURPOSE North Carolina Woodworker, Inc. was formed to promote and provide education, communication, collaboration, and other services ancillary and reasonably related to the learning and practice of the art of woodworking in the state of North Carolina and surrounding areas.

I voted to allow anyone to buy a ticket but would sprinkle "the winners are responsible for local pickup or shipping costs." in more places and make it stand out more or even as a checkbox when buying tickets. I don't really recall where it was posted so you may already be doing that.

    If not currently done, this.

    Re: Future NCWW Raffle Eligibility

I voted to allow everyone to buy. I don't think we should change it based on one bad experience. I've bought tickets the last 2 years since I became a member, and haven't won a thing. I don't feel upset that someone else, even a non-member, won something over me.

I would agree that we should make it painfully obvious that winners are solely responsible for pickup and shipping costs. A checkbox would work, and maybe going further to list all the raffle rules and the checkbox is agreeing to all the terms and conditions listed. Perhaps adding that any unclaimed prizes will be re-raffled at a later date or used as door prizes at another event? (Maybe there's something that says that already)

In respect to member dues, I think the only way it would be possible to sustain something like that would to make a "Freemium" model - joining and becoming a member to the site would be free, but there would be benefits that only premium members would enjoy. What those benefits are would have to be determined (waived or discounted fees for attending workshops, for example?).

I don't understand the idea of making the website/club a closed organization and then opening it up to non-members. Why become a member? Supporters of the site have to compete with non-supporters (except for the ticket purchase) to win prizes. It's not a big deal, but the question was asked.

I believe the motivation for making NCWW a "closed organization" is to have an increased sense of community which I would say is successful. I don't expect open/national organizations to have the amount of personal interaction, shop crawls, picnics, workshops, lunch gatherings etc that we have here. On NCWW, you can go on the site and ask something like "does anyone have a drum sander that I can stop by and use", you will get several offers in a matter of days. I'm not sure it works the same way on other sites.

The raffle is a means to generate revenue to keep NCWW going (website, outreach, etc.)

Personally, I don't see a direct connection between membership eligibility and raffle eligibility.

It sounds like a "closed organization", except for raffle ticket sales.

It is a closed organization. Membership needs to be requested and approved.

Then "everything" should be for members only.

The raffle isn't intended to be a benefit. It is a means to generate revenue to keep NCWW going.

I don't really care one way or another as long as we don't have to go back to those awful donation drives. I hate those with a passion. I actually expected the vast majority to say, "Let's keep the raffle within NCWW". It hasn't turned out that way so far. As I indicated in post #13, predicting human behavior is rarely simple.

    Re: Future NCWW Raffle Eligibility

The financial needs of this site will undoubtedly grow along with its opportunities available to its members and the benefits to the WWing community as a whole. I could use the same logic about someone who goes to SC to buy their lottery tickets and the SC Lottery Commission denying my winnings if I won. Who benefited from my purchase? SC. If they don't like the winning $$ going out of state, don't sell me a ticket. I sure won't buy if I don't have a chance to win.
I'm sure almost everyone at some time or another has been approached by someone asking them to buy a raffle ticket to benefit some organization to which they do not belong, yet that organization is willing to offer you the opportunity to win for the purchase of a ticket(s).
My dad won a pony at a horse show once when I was a kid, but he had to pay someone to get it to the house. Same here. Let anyone buy, but make it clear they have to arrange shipping. I believe I even asked that question in the raffle thread.

All the direct benefits are for members only:
    Posting to the site
    Signing up for Shop Crawls
    Using the classifieds
    Signing up for workshops

Being a member allows an individual to post photos in albums on the site. Gallery and Albums.

I think this is one of the big things for members and I wish more photos were available for viewing and more people would look in the albums.

Now with the ability to just paste a photo from your computer to the reply you are writing, it couldn't be easier to follow up with an answer or add another question.

    Re: Future NCWW Raffle Eligibility

My opinion : As we have 10,000 members and only 95 have replied to the survey - why is it a subject for discussion.
We elected a Board of directors to make decisions and to guide the organization - let them do their job.
I agree with what Scott said - you win it - you pick it up - no shipping !!
