    New Member In The Mountains

I am Wiley Cotton. I just moved from the Triangle (Holly Springs) to Waynesville, about 30 minutes west of Asheville on the Great Smokey Mountain Parkway. I'm 70 years old, a retired small business owner, and new to quality woodworking, although I've been around tools all my life.

My goal is to set up and equip a quality, complete woodworking shop and build anything and everything until I find 4-6 items I enjoy making, and then concentrate on them. Coincidentally to deciding on Waynesville, I discovered a special program at Haywood Community College, the local two year college. They have a special Master Crafts Program in four disciplines, and I have been accepted into the Master Crafts Program--Wood for fall semester. Yep, at 70 I'm going back to school...Whoo Whee, it's going to be fun and challenging. In two years I will graduate with an Associates degree in Wood. I figure by learning from expert teachers and collabarating with other students I will save more money than the tuition just by avoiding mistakes I would make if I got into working on a self-taught basis.

I'm really looking forward both to school and putting together my new shop. Re: the shop, I am now in the market for an entire woodworking shop I can purchase as one bundle. I am ready to buy a quality shop wall-to-wall, right down to the scrap lumber. By doing this I hope to avoid two things: running all over 3 states over 2 years buying tools one at a time and wasting time on wild goose chases going to look at "woodworking shops" that have been picked over and stripped of the quality tools. I am a serious buyer for a serious shop; please don't tout your buddy's Black & Decker/Central Machinery/Harbor Freight out the wazoo/built one doghouse in 5 years shop. A fellow serious hobbyist who has gotten too old or disabled to continue his passion would be perfect. I will take everything We will know the brands to look for when we connect.

I am looking forward to meeting fellow enthusiasts in my area through NCWW. I've been an observer for a year, and now it's time to roll up my sleeves and do it.

Welcome to one of the friendliest sites on the net. I too moved to the mountains after retiring. Not as far west as you, but a little more north. We're right off the Blue Ridge Parkway near tuggles gap. Enjoy the cooler weather and let us know what projects you're working on. I too would be interested in how the community college courses work out for you.

Just found one of our other members is liquidating his shop - here is the thread:

Welcome to the beautiful mountains of western North Carolina. Like you, I moved west from the Triangle area (in 2004) after I retired and really love it here. Aside from the great asset you've already discovered at Haywood Community College (I've heard good things about that program), be sure to check out Greg Paolini's shop in Canton (he gives classes in woodworking and is also a Festool Training Center) and be sure to visit the Klingspor's Woodworking Shop in Fletcher for all of your woodworking tools and supplies. I am also the President of the Western NC Woodworkers Association, a group of about 65 area woodworkers that meets the second Saturday of the month at Klingspor's (we just had our June meeting this past weekend). Good luck with your shop setup and welcome to this great forum.
Every day brings a new adventure -- it is great to be retired!

Welcome to the site, Wiley. Glad you decided to join. Occasionally we'll see ads for someone wanting to sell an entire shop, but usually it's piecemeal, one or two tools at a time. The two year program you're entering should give you access to a lot of tools, as well as different projects, and help you get a feel for what you like and don't like.

Good luck, and I look forward to following your journey into woodworking.
I'll gladly tell you how I do something. Just please don't confuse that with the right way to do it, and almost certainly not the only way.

Welcome aboard, Wiley. I found Community Colleges to be a great undervalued source of learning. As a young man, I attended courses at CPCC. I had to keep going until I got my parking tokens and classes to even out.
