Dust collector hose fits some tools but not others?

So, I wrapped duct tape around the smaller ones.

    Have done the same thing.

Bought some Rockler Dust Right 4" fittings. They seem incompatible with other 4" fittings. I don't get it. 4" should be 4".

I think the Rockler 4" isn't the same as other 4" fittings, my Rocker 4" always have issues fitting to others that fit together fine.

This is my frustration with DC in general. There is no industry standard that I have found, so we are stuck with adapter-city or tape we must replace periodically. It's all about the Benjamins I believe.

I made so many trips to Klingspors and Lowes for fittings I lost count. I also amassed quite a collection of 4" pipe fittings, and reducers simply because I might need them someday. But there is very little similarity between 4" sanitary pipe and fittings, and the size of fittings made for DC. It can be frustrating, but is it ever worth it when the system is up and functioning. Hang in there, and it'll come together.

I happened to own a 3D printer so I just print what I need!

Just as frustrating are the plethora of duct collector fitting sizes found on our power tools. There truly appears that there is no standard when it comes to dust collection at the tool level for most of the tools that I own.

I could be wrong - but I believe it is all in the conversion...

4 inches is NOT 4 inches... 4 X 25.4=101.6 so if you make it 100 mm, (close enough for a taper fit, right? or you make it 102)

this is just a guess, but I seem to remember 100mm dust collection fittings on something advertized...

Re: Dust collector hose fits some tools but not others?

If you have a PVC pipe or fitting that is reasonably close, you can expand or shrink (harder) it with a heat gun (or torch if you are careful). Schedule 40 pipe takes a bit of heat to get soft but will expand pretty well. It doesn't shrink as well, maybe it would if I pulled on it (to thin the wall). Fittings are normally thick wall so they move even less.

When reasonably possible, messing with plumbing pieces seems a bunch cheaper than ordering a bunch of DC connections - that may or may not work.

Has anyone tried the neoprene rubber adapters and couplings available from the BORGs? Sometimes they will stretch to fit.....

Re: Dust collector hose fits some tools but not others?

Dennis has suggested the best solution for many fitment problems that face folks putting together a dust collection system. I have used Fernco Adapters for many dust collection applications since they are made in so many sizes and are not expensive. I've used them in sizes up to 6" x 6" for slight bends in my main PVC duct runs to small ones for connecting my miter saw to standard 2" Shop Vac hose.
Every day brings a new adventure -- it is great to be retired!

If it's close, I've had pretty good luck with foam weatherstripping tape wrapped around the outside of the fitting that is going to be on the inside.
No job is worth doing unless you can get a new tool out of it.

I used them on my vacuum system for my CNC to go from Fein vac to PVC pipes and they worked really well.
