    Small walnut bowl

Finally got a few hours in the shop this week. I cut two circles from some 8/4 walnut and face glued together. Cut a small relief in the bottom for chuck jaws to secure. Roughing gouge and bowl gouge only tools used. Sanded with 80, 100, 120, 150, and 220. Finished with 2 coats of clear shellac with light sanding after the first.

    Re: Small walnut bowl

Very nice! Walnut has such a beautiful shine on bowls.

Safety note: Beware of using a roughing gouge on a bowl though - they should only be used on spindles (Roughing gouge is short for spindle roughing gouge). Can be very dangerous.

Thanks for the reminder James. The roughing gouge was only for initial truing of outside, then i put it away.

Even for truing up the outside. The difference is when turning a spindle, youíre cutting all side grain. On bowls, youíre cutting side grain and end grain. The stress that puts on the tool is too much for the tang, where as the round bar stock of a bowl gouge is much stronger.

Ok. Iíll stop being the safety police, I swear! Itís a seriously beautiful bowl!

Thank you, I'm still a noob when it comes to the lathe and all helpful hints are most welcome. I'll consider myself lucky up to this point...

Looks great, you brought out some beautiful grain in that walnut. Hardly a noob when you can create a nice bowl. Keep up the good work!

That's a pretty little bowl Neal! I think you're learning your lessons well!
