    Possible Outreach project?

A few weeks ago, Mike was asking for ideas that could be used for Outreach turners that were older than the light saber group. I just got a piece of lacewood and wanted to see what it looked like in a non-flat form. I had no idea what it could become when I put it on the lathe, and after a couple of minutes i decided it was now a key ring fob. Drilled a small hole through one end. total time spent 10 minutes including a little sanding and finish.

The designs are limited by how far the split ring needs to spread to thread through the hole in the end. Just throwing this out for discussion.

I like it. Seems simple enough for a beginner and results in a useable, handsome product. Also, it doesn't take much wood. Great idea!

If you added a screw eye and a cap nut you could do any sort of design on there.

i like it for an outreach project.

Key ring kits are on the shelf at Klingspors. I have turned quite a bunch, but it would require a pen mandrel and the bushings.

We have a pen mandrel on the trailer, BTW (3 in fact). Neal, did you turn it between centers and then part it off?

    Re: Possible Outreach project?

    Ken,
This one was not on any mandrel, but chucked up with tailstock support. I used my skew chisel to pare it off.

This was just an end product, an idea for future projects. Details for implementation and modifications can be discussed for efficiency and safety of the participants, if elected to go forward.

Bottle stoppers are easy to make. Drill a hole in the wood, insert the dowel, turn the stopper, finish and glue on the cork. Really inexpensive material-wise and nice to have.

Great idea as an alternative to the light saber.
(and a more "adult" project - most kids don't have keys, and we have a number of adults that want to "learn to turn!"
