    Opinions on this saw?

Looking to replace my old crapsman table saw.
Found this on C/L and would like opinions.

Honest opinions appreciated. Not much in the budget right now for a new one.

    Re: Opinions on this saw?

These are older, but a lot of them have been around as they were quite popular. Price seems high, but I donít have perspective .

Worth checking out. Ensure the arbor/bearings are smooth and tight. Make sure sliding table, height adjustment, fence, angle adjust, etc all are smooth and do not have much if any slop.

I donít think new parts are available any longer, but I expect you can find used parts.

If I remember correctly, there used to be a web forum for owners of these as they were very popular at one time.

    Good luck!

Methinks to price is a bit high, as well.

    Michael,
Google the BT3000, it has an almost cult following, at one time there was a forum board, BT3central, set up to share tips and techniques. You'll find strong feeling both pro and con for the saw on various other boards. I've been looking, not real hard, for one just to play around with.

You will find that virtually none of the standard table saw accessories will work/fit on this saw. Just a thought.

I had one... It was a good little saw. Emphasis on little. I gave mine to a buddy when I upgraded.

    Re: Opinions on this saw?

I owned one for several years. My biggest complaint is that it had no miter slot, so none of the available jigs would fit. There was a miter slot accessory table piece and I bought one of them, but in two tries, they failed to ship one to me that survived the trip, so I ended up making one of my own. It filled the need for a few years, but was quite under powered, and noisy. I think his price is too high as well.

For about that price, you should be able to find a Delta Contractor Saw. They are ,much more powerful with an induction motor (no brushes and 2 hp), have miter slots, and hold their accuracy much better than the BT3000. They are also nearly bullet proof, so you won't likely need any replacement parts, except for maybe bearings and belts, which are easy to find.

I also had one, but due to the lack of a miter slot, and low power, often stalled the blade in a cut, I sold it to a friend who wanted it, but he also got rid of it. I agree that the price is high, and a Craftsman Contractor can bought for about that same price. JMHO.

Mike, do yourself a favor and save up your pennies. You're wanting to upgrade, not inherit someone else's problem or headache. Check the likes of CL on a regular basis or save the coin to buy something new. I can tell you sellers on CL are crazy when it comes to prices. Anything practical goes fast so you have to be able jump on it right away. Even new items I'm stores are negotiable.

    [Edit]

Do you searches with "tablesaw" and "table saw". You'll find more this way.

    Re: Opinions on this saw?

When I lived in Orlando, one of my friends bought one of these saws. At the time, it was a nice little portable saw. I always though that it was on the light-duty side of the table saw spectrum. As I recall, he had some issues with the fence. It was a long time ago,.

    Re: Opinions on this saw?

I started with a used Craftsman Contractor Saw with aluminum table I bought off CL for $200. Not the best decision but it worked. had to do some modification because the miter slots weren't square to the blade and there were no trunions to adjust. Hat to take a die grinder and oblong the holes that fastened the table to the base. Got it lined up and was able to make box joints for (bee) hive supers that fit like a glove.

Saved a few coins, got a good tax refund, flipped a coin between a Powermatic PM1000 and a Jet Proshop. Was really leaning towards the PM1000 but the Tech Sales guy sold me on the Proshop. While the dust collection make not be that of a cabinet saw, I can imagine anything more dead on accurate in that HP class.

    Re: Opinions on this saw?

I have decided against it, maybe break the piggy bank. I do like the powermatic. Many years ago when I did cabinet work we had one and it definitely got its use. Always accurate, and stable. Was a pleasure to use. like you mentioned, I have a well abused craftsman with an aluminum table that I sometimes have to beat into submission to get it to cut right.
Well something newer and better will come along soon.

    Re: Opinions on this saw?

You won't regret it. At the time I bought, the PM100 was $1799 and the Jet with cast iron tables was around $1400. Not a lot of difference but pennies do count.
