looking for rough cut oak - 1.5 inch

    Hi all

I'm new to the site. In greenville. not a pro but i like to make sawdust.

i need to turn some chair legs on my lathe to duplicate a really old kitchen chair. i'm trying to find some oak that's at least 1.5 inch thick and 4 feet long.

are there any saw mills or decent stores within 50 miles of greenville?

    thanks

Dunno if they have a Wurth Wood Group near you, but they carry 6/4 and 8/4 oak.

I have some red oak that would work for that. Im in the Greensboro area, could possibly Pony Express it to you. I doubt I have a 4 foot piece, but I know I have many that are long enough for staircase ballusters ( I believe they are 24" long).

Contact Scott Smith (scsmith42) at this site. He's one of our sawyers specializing in oak wood, but I don't know if he'll sell a single 4' piece of 6/4 or 8/4.

There used to be a sawmill/lumber place just south of Gvl on highway 43 I think, but I can't find them today.

I think Stuart Kent is selling some lumber and he is around Grenville, as I recall. Give him a PM.

+1 on talking to Scott Smith. Not many choices close by. I used to get some from Jon Baker out at Calico but he passed away this week. He had been in poor health for a while.

I had a small amount of flat sawn 8/4 White oak put away but I may have given it away. I'll check when I get home. If I've still got some you're welcome to it.... Just come pick it up and I'll give it to you.

Eb, Id encourage you to examine any leg stock closely and try to avoid grain runout that could be a weak point.

Re: looking for rough cut oak - 1.5 inch

Thanks to all for the replies. Chris Goris - the chair leg is just under 4 feet so the 24 inchers won't work - but thank you for the offer. And thanks Chris C. if you have it i'm interested.

I go to Raleigh once every 3 months so Wurth may be a good place to check.

My wife got me an "alaskan saw mill" attachment for me chain saw for xmas so hopefully in the future i'll be able to make some of my own stock. just waiting for one of my trees to fall

ANd thanks for adivce tendriver -- i'm going to have to turn it and then bend it a little. that should be an adventure! the chair set is from my great grandmother and my dad played on them in the 1930s so i'm hoping i can duplicate one and repair the others to make a clean set of 6 for one of my kids. no hurry - kind of a fiddling around project for when i'm in between others.

thanks again to all - i'll check back!

Nice history surrounding those chairs. How about a few pics of this potentially heirloom set and details of what you'll be working from today (like a curved or bent turning or is it a turning that's later curved and bent?).

Re: looking for rough cut oak - 1.5 inch

I have some 6/4 white oak. Mostly quarter and rift sawn. Cut a couple of years ago. If you just need a board or 2, I'll gladly give you a couple. I'm about 5 minutes from the intersection of I-40 & I-95 for an easy reference point. Just let me know.

All I have is a few shorts....30" 4/4 pieces I saved for making drawbore pegs and such. The 8/4 stuff I thought was oak was actually walnut. Sorry.

Thanks for checking chris and thanks for the offer DS. i may take you up on it if i'm still looking this summer. i'm going to keep scouring the area.

i will try to post a photo of the chair leg if i can figure out how. i'll probably need some advice on bending. i have had a lot of fun making spindles out of a short piece of oak i salvaged from my yard.
