    Why not make a template so you could use plunge router to drill the holes. Many of the down draft tables I have seen at IWF, use slots rather than holes. They also have a rubber type coating, but some use a piece of no slip carpet padding.

    Who says a hole has to be round?
    What if you elongate the hole to be a slot?
    As long as you stay close to the size of the pipe it will work fine.
    If you go to crazy you will lose air velocity to draw the dust down.

    Haven't used it yet for sanding but I did light a paper towel and blew it out. It drew the smoke in from the furthest corners holding the paper towel about 4" above the top. Any little breeze or movement of air, did disrupt it. I think it will be fine. Dust is a little heavier than smoke and I'll be working closer to center.
