    First pens turned

I finally got around to buying a couple of pen kits, and used some purpleheart and zebra wood I had acquired.

The purpleheart is a .5mm pencil kit, picked up both at Klingspores in Winston earlier this week. I was surprised at how easy it actually was.

Great job. Definitely slippery slope. I started turning them a year ago and find it addicting.

What kind of finish did you put on them?

on the zebrawood, i used sanding sealer, then went over with a couple of coats of shellac, followed by a coating of paste wax. On the purpleheart, i used sanding sealer and a coating of friction polish. I think that's all i did to them, lol.

Neal, very nice looking pens. I have not heard of using sanding sealer on pens. The results look very good.

    Re: First pens turned

The next one (and there will certainly be many next ones!), try your hand at a CA finish. I found it not as difficult as some might suggest. The trade off, however, is you lose that nice feel of the wood that you get with a friction polish or wax. But if you like super shiny, give CA a go and post the results!

I'm a fan of the kit you used on the zebrawood (woodcraft calls it a cigar pen, not sure what it's sold as at Klingspor). It's a beefy pen, and I like that you can twist it either way to extend he nib.

it is also the cigar pen kit at Klingspore's. i've watched several videos using CA finishes, i will give it a try soon. Have to get some more kits first. Oh, i now see i have fallen down the slippery slope that everyone was warning about...

It's not just the pen kits that sends you down the slope - it's the tools and accessories that you want to enhance your game and capabilities. DAMHIKT

    Re: First pens turned

Welcome to the DARK SIDE of woodworking Neal! The spinney thing with pen making can be terribly addicting. I've turned several hundred pens and pencils and can't stop! And I don't want help either! One thing you may want to add to your tool kit is micro mesh. It goes up to 12,000 grit, and gives a fantastically polished surface before applying the finish. If you are going to experiment with CA finish, be sure to buy some Debonder too. It's much easier on the fingers than using an Xacto knife to separate them when you accidentally bond them together. I sure learned that the hard way....
