Re: Earlex HV5500 HVLP Spraying System

Can anyone comment on the diffs between the Sprayport and the HV5500? From a sale price stand point, the Sprayport seems like a no-brainer... someone talk me out of this deal

Go ahead and buy it. You know you want it. In fact, you deserve it! You won't be happy until you have it. You know it, I know it, everyone knows it. From now, every project, no matter how well executed, will have the curse of "it would have looked SOOO much better if I had only bought it". Plus, nobody in the woodworking community will take you seriously until you buy it.

    You're welcome.

Re: Earlex HV5500 HVLP Spraying System

I have the older model Earlex 5000 (single stage HVLP) and it's been plenty suitable and handy for my use. It's a snap to clean as well.

The Earlex Sprayport series is a 2 or 3 stage HVLP primarily for professional use. While the sale price may be a no-brainer I think it'd be a PITA to use for an introduction to spray finishing.

Re: Earlex HV5500 HVLP Spraying System

Well, after starting this thread I've changed my mind....I think! Earlier this year I was at a workshop at Phil's place and remember now (after another offline conversations with Phil) How simple it was to use and clean his LVLP spry guns. I already have a compressor with more than enough capacity to run the LVLP gear. So with much less cash layout I believe I will be going with the Sprayit equipment like this: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0...KIKX0DER&psc=1

The Gravity feed equipment is much simpler to clean up and since I already have the compressor, it's a simple decision.

Re: Spray-it LVLP and compressor Spraying System

    Michael:
I have gone the route you plan, using a Spray-it LVLP gun (I was at one of Phil's spray workshops as well) and my existing compressor. Cost was a definite factor for me, since like you I had a compressor. I tried an Earlex at the spray finishing workshop and found the 'constant air bleed' to be disconcerting.

I have sprayed one table top using Target Coating conversion varnish (8800 series I think). I am a complete novice with spraying, and achieved (almost) acceptable results. Getting consistent coatings was not as easy for this varnish as it was for the shellac undercoat (either SealCoat or Target's water based shellac; both of those shellacs were very easy to spray reasonably well).

I will keep spraying and learning - can only get better right? I am fairly certain that my challenges were due to my inexperience with gun set up and not strictly hardware capability issues.

Let us know how you like the system, and what your results are.

Maybe your technique is getting better (gun pattern adjustment, arm motion while spraying, etc) so it may not the brand of sprayer. Geez, I spent a ton of bucks on a sprayer and my spraying is still crappy!

I purchased the 2 stage unit. Lots of house projects in the queue, want them to look nice :-)

Jeff - I am not quite there, but that's because I only spent a half ton of bucks.... my spraying isn't up to par (yet??!).

Gotcha! I'm just fine with my Earlex 5000; It's not the gun it's the operator's technique!

Re: Spray-it LVLP and compressor Spraying System

Giving ya pat on the back Jeff. It is the gun. The 5500 is almost double the CFM as the 5000 and the Sprayport they are selling is about double the 5500. Makes a big difference in atomization which leads to a better and smoother finish. What they are selling for $300 is the 6002 which they have discontinued.
