Looking for Wood Source - Winston Salem

I'm looking for some 6/4 maple for end grain cutting boards. Any suggestions for a source in the Winston Salem area?

    Thanks

    GPS Hardwoods in Kernersville.
I'll gladly tell you how I do something. Just please don't confuse that with the right way to do it, and almost certainly not the only way.

Looks like he just has 4/4 and 9/4 in stock now.
He may have other sizes in his shorts section

+1 on GPS Hardwoods, give him a call. He may be able to plane it down to 6/4 for an additional fee. He can do it faster with his equipment and save you the wear and tear on your planer.

I stopped GPS Hardwoods today - nothing in 6/4 and only 1 stick of 9/4. I just can't bring myself to waste that much wood. I willhe is a great guy and has some really nice looking wood.

Since Glenn did not have it your next three options are The Hardwood Store, Wall Lumber, and Klingspor.

I was at West Penn Hardwoods in Conover yesterday. HOLY SMOKES! If they don't have what you want it's probably extinct.

Re: Looking for Wood Source - Winston Salem

I looked at west penn hardwoods web site - they only listed 4/4 (sold out) and at $9.78 a board foot I think they are way out of line. I'm going to stop by Wall lumber - they advertise 8/4 at a reasonable price. I really only need shorts (2-4 feet) so maybe they have something tht would make sense. I tried face gluing two pieces of 3/4 maple - didn't like how visible the glue line was on the end grain.

    Rick,
I've bought plenty from Wall and highly recommend them. Just keep in mind that shorts are often cut off the ends and probably more prone to splitting. Most cracks you can see but some can hide. An end grain board made with hidden checks or cracks can crack. DAMHIKT. Especially considering some folks will wash the board by soaking them in the sink. DAMHIKT. Just ask my sister...who never listens to me.

So consider buying a full board and not using shorts.

Re: Looking for Wood Source - Winston Salem

I ended up taking a ride to Wall lumber yesterday - a 30 to 40 minute ride. I was impressed with what they had to offer and with the customer service. I knew from their web site that they didn't offer the 6/4 maple I was after but thought it would be worth the trip to see what they did have. As expected they had 5/4 and 8/4 maple and I was on the verge of getting the 8/4 (lot of waste for this project). I asked one of the guys there to help me check out the 5/4 and I was able to find a couple of "fat" 5/4 that I decided to take a gamble on - hoping I could finish them close to the dimensions I needed. The guy that was working with me had no problem digging through the stack for the two pieces I wanted and was willing to cut them in half so they fit in the car. The maple was also priced very reasonably. I will definitely be going back when my needs dictate it.

    Thanks for the ideas

    Rick
