    another recent project

Here is another recently completed project from my shop. This one was a real doozy! This was another architect design/build project I did with the East Carolina University School of Business. The architect designed an eclectic asymmetrical space for the newly remodeled student reception and technology center.

So the toughest part of this project was designing solid hardwood torsion boxes...Yep, you read that one right, solid hardwood... That one took a lot of thought, especially when you consider that the longest face of this desk is 18', and the desk is 42" high. It is all solid hard maple. The torsion boxes are keyed together with slip mortise and tenons that allow the panels to expand and contract freely without bowing or cupping. The front panels are cantilevered off the floor also, so they are hung from the 2" thick top. That large section required 18 guys to best the the three flights of stairs while lifting somewhere in the neighborhood of 1000 lbs.

I've built some big pieces over the years, but this one was different in every way and presented challenges at every level.

You did a great job on that desk, Stuart!
I like making things. I have a wood shop at home. I am a terrible carpenter but I love doing it. Raymond - Charlotte, NC

    Awesome.
I know you believe you understand what you think I said, but I am not sure you realize that what you heard is not what I meant.

Awesome, will do! Yes, third floor of Bate, go up the elevator and walk straight out on 3. Look forward to meeting you and hearing your thoughts on the desk!

    Re: another recent project

Just took the boss over to look at it. Pictures don't do it justice!

For those of you who can't visit, note that the end supports are tapered front to back and top/bottom to middle for a surface with 3 planes. The white lacquered portion stands proud of the rest of the surface due to the tapers.

    Oh, just come see it.

    Nice craftsmanship Stuart! We'll done!
Experience is a hard teacher; she gives the test first, and the lesson later.

The design looks simple and functional, but not sterile (as in lacking craftsmanship).
The thing that holds up all my woodworking is simply getting started.

Ha! I am unabashedly addicted to coffee - other things have to go for me! Lunch at Mike's sounds great, I'll try to nail down my schedule and get back to you.
