Re: Table Saw Sled
For years just about every cut I did was on the sled. I had a large sled and it was a lot easier to cut with it than to take it off unless I wanted to rip something really long.
No job is worth doing unless you can get a new tool out of it.

Re: Table Saw Sled
A cross cut sled was one of the first things I built after buying my table saw. It was a good choice and I use it often. But really only when the stock I'm dealing with is too wide for my compound miter saw / station.

Re: Table Saw Sled
I said the same thing for years, and then finally bit the bullet. Wished I had done it earlier. With your shop made sled, cut out a seven sided frame. The Dubby has index so it's easy. Avail yourself to both Klingspor's and Woodcraft's drool centers, AKA stores. (Be sure and bring a towel to wipe up drool.) Don't take a CC or wallet with you on first trip. Be sure and schedule a "sick day" for Klingspor's Extravganza in the fall. If Woodworking Show comes back to DC next year, I'm planning on going. You are welcome to tag along. Tons of ideas, and FREE one hour workshops.

Re: Table Saw Sled
I needed to taper some strips of maple that were 3/16" x 2" x 8 feet long down to 3/32" over 4 feet (a very slight and precise taper). I thought about all the ways I cut cut off a finger or two then decided to build a vacuum taper jig. Took about half a day and saved several days over hand planing.

Re: Table Saw Sled
I have the $200+ JessEm Miter Gauge (one of the ones thatwas good – before they gave up trying to produce them with consistency) and yetmy go-to cross-cut method is my sled. A dead-on crosscut sled is dead on.

Re: Table Saw Sled
Haven't had time to really dig into this yet, but I do have the runners made. I have some 3/4 purpleheart that I've been holding on for a project that I have in mind, but due to the density of this it seemed to be perfect for it. All planed down and sanded...super smooth action!
So, runners made! Going to look into incorporating a rotating miter guide into it. The Dubby is a good inspiration.

Re: Table Saw Sled
Ditto. The most important table saw accessory around (unless you have a sliding table or course!)

Re: Table Saw Sled
Got the basic sled all finished up and coated with a healthy dose of BLO. BLO has become my go-to for sealing and protecting these little projects. It's effective, looks good and cheap! Plus, it's easy cleanup.
It really surprised me how long it took to put this guy together. It's far from perfect, (I used scrap pieces of what I had), but from the shaping of the runners to the gluing/clamping/screwing/sanding/sealing, it took me a few hours.
I'll post up a couple pictures later this evening

Wouldn't have been able to cut this little guy without it:
