After months of searching and weeks of waiting...

My Stanley #79 dado plane arrived today. In mint condition.

With a fine original box, and sharp full length cutters

yeah, they are all over e-bay, but the best price I found for a nasty one, very worn and pitted was $50 plus shipping.

some went as high as $100, not as nice, and no box.

    Let's just say I'm happy.

    Nice find.
I know you believe you understand what you think I said, but I am not sure you realize that what you heard is not what I meant.

    Congrats Mike. Nice find.
I'll gladly tell you how I do something. Just please don't confuse that with the right way to do it, and almost certainly not the only way.

Nice find, Mike -- just curious about the 2 L 30 on the box lid -- perhaps it came from across the pond? And while you call it a dado plane, isn't more commonly called a Side Rabbet Plane? (Not that it matters, it is a very useful tool!). I bought one of the Lee Valley Veritas SRP's earlier this year and it is a sweet little plane. Enjoy!

It does look like 2.30 to me, which is British currency.

At today's FX rate that translates to about $2 and 88 cents.

Re: After months of searching and weeks of waiting...

It shipped from Scotland but very well could have been originally sold in England.

Closest thing I ever owned to mint condition or new old stock. I can't find a single blemish.

Probaly right about the name, I think in pictures so don't always translate to the correct word. Have also heard it called a sliding dovetail plane.

What a great find Mike, from the photos it looks as if it hasn't ever seen the light of day, let alone been used. The currency markings make it even more interesting.

I agree, I've looked but haven't found any info on how this is used. How about a demo video?

No viddy but I shot a couple photos.

You can use a rabbet plane or a shoulder plane to widen a rabbet. But this is the way to widen a dado or groove or even a sliding dovetail.
