Few months ago I made a yarn bowl for my wife, and she took it to a knitting group and got all the others wanting one. So I've been busy cranking out a few of these. Fun little projects.

Very nice! How do you make the opening in the side wall?

I sand and finish the bowl on the chuck first, then start by drilling a hole with a 1/2" bit, then using a dremel, carving a path up to the rim. I've also used a palm router with a straight bit at low speed to clear out a lot of waste at the top. Have to make sure you sand hole and channel very smooth since you don't want the yarn to snag on anything.

Very nice, with me being a scroller I was thinking how hard would it be cutting the curve out with a coping saw

Love it! I wonder some times how many things I can see in a day, and think to myself why I didn't think of that.

Been wanting to make one for my wife; thanks for posting all those fine pictures of your beautiful work James. Your explanation helps me to visualize how I will be able to come up with something similar.
