Prefer electric. Mid- to large size. Willing to swap simple bowl or two. Consider cash if necessary.

Have you seen the new silicone mats that are electric, have fine temp control, heat any pan or dish of your choice, and roll up when not in use?

I learn something new every day. Knowing Gene was a turner I assumed a "chaffing dish" was some attachment for the lathe in turning bowls. Something like, "That's a really nice bowl you turned, but how did you chaff it?"

Chaffiing dish would be for melting paraffin and rolling a bowl blank through the "soup" to seal the end grain - I hope.

My wife broke her arm moving some tables, had surgery, a plate installed, and therapy. Her therapist recommended something like this. It keeps the wax hot, is constant temperature, but it takes a couple hours to heat up from cold so we leave it on all the time so she can heat her hand and wrist a couple times a day. I don't think a chaffing dish will give you the temperature control you need for heating a large amount of wax.

This may not be the best one for the job, but something like this would be my best guess. I'm sure they make industrial versions for large wax dipping tanks if you want true production capability.

I use a water bath to heat hide glue and keep it warm. They use these in scientific labs to maintain a constant temperature. It will go up to 100 degrees C (boiling point of water), and works like a double boiler. That said, I imagine you could fill it with wax instead of water. The melting point of paraffin is 56 degrees C (according to Google). Mine heats the water in a few minutes and maintains the temperature spot on.

I got mine off eBay as a used item. A search brings up a lot of these at varying price ranges and sizes.

RE: crockpots. I'm thinking about fitting an 18" dia. wood billet into one of those pieces of ceramic...Naw, I believe I want a 16-20" long SST pan. But I have thought about it and have looked at the Goodwill/Habitat. And, therefore the search for a chaffing dish.

As they say in Physics, as long as the water is there, the temp won't go above 100C.
