Thinking of getting one, (if I can talk the wife into it) I know it's Woodworkers supply's name brand built in the orient, anyone have any experience with one?

From what I've heard, I'd pass. Woodtek brand has been dragged thru the mud so that doesn't help, but definitely not known as a quality bandsaw. How much are they? Gotta link or picture of the one you are looking at? What do you want the bandsaw for (purpose)?

It's their 18" one on sale at Woodworkers Supply. Mostly to cut bowl blanks, re-saw with, etc. I'm probably going to keep my eye out for a used saw, but was wondering about the Woodtek.

I looked and only saw their 17" on sale, no 18", for $775. Add in tax and you're well over $800. Looks like a nice saw, but I would watch Craigslist for a bit.

don't know what Woodtek you are looking at,but for those numbers I would consider the Rikon 14".It has an excellent cut hight.
And used is always a better option.
The Rikon can be purchased locally and no need for S/H.
And for the record...do you know of one NOT built in the Orient?

Actually bandsaws are one of the tools where some are made in places other than the Orient, Laguna and Minimax are made in Italy just to name a couple. Albeit, they are some of the more expensive models.

I'd go for a Grizzly if I wanted a new saw, or maybe even see what Rick DiNardo has to make a deal on.

Just my thoughts.

My bad, 17", 18", close enough. I think I'll pass on that and see what I can find used. Thanks all. My little 12" freebie craftsman isn't cutting it anymore. (pun intended)

Rob I think that's a wise decision. I looked into the saws http://woodworker.com/cgi-bin/FULLPRES.exe?PARTNUM=118-199&LARGEVIEW=ON ... they look decent, but dated. I would definitely talk with Rick at The Woodworking Source, and watch CL a bit. What's your budget? I'll keep an eye out for you too.

Is that called active enabling? :rotflm: :rotflm:

Rob, I also think looking used is a good idea. I bought my BS new but could have saved a few hundred dollars if I'd found it used.

Right now I don't have a budget, but I'm working on that. I'm just going to keep my eye out for that deal that is too good to pass up.

Rob, as Jeremy said, call Rick at the Woodworking source. 704-658-1111. He will hook you up with the Shop Fox machine of your choice at a very fair price. And Shop Fox has a two year warranty verses a one year from Grizzly. The two Shop Fox machines that I have are excellent quality.
