Where can I get one of these?

I have a friend who would like to acquire an item similar to the one shown below for her husband for his birthday or Christmas. If anyone knows of a possible source I would appreciate you letting me know, here or in a PM. If you're able to make one for her please let me know that as well. Many thanks everyone.

These are hard to find at a reasonable price, plus they are heavy so transport is a consideration. I have been casually looking for a flat file for my daughter (who is an artist in Austin Tx.) for over a year.

That's a map chest. I searched high and low for them some time back.

I ended up getting scrap booking drawers instead.

EDIT - Gritz is also correct in calling them "flat files". Map chests are sort of a subcategory that is smallish for a flat file and they tend to be more targeted as furniture where a lot of the flat files are industrial.

I used to have a big metal flat file that i used for storing film positives for my silk screen business. University auctions and Library sales used to be a good place to look. Probably all gone now.

I could build it. dimensions would need to be provided and delivery could be an issue. [several hours away.] it would be on a cost plus basis though and could get fairly expensive.

The big difference between the map chests I found and the others is depth. 40" x 18.75" is the large size for a map chest, but flat files come in sizes big enough for filing dance floors.

The picture in the original post still looks like a large map chest to me though.

I've been eyeing this one on craigslist the last few times it was posted. I have _not_ seen it in person, but man would I love to have it. I did communicate with the seller once. He is asking $500 for it, but indicated that $350 would take it out the door.

We took metal (Steelcase or less expensive) plan files and added Cherry around it including drawer fronts. Worked well and looks great.

Check for blueprint cabinet, often considerably less inexpensive then 'map cabinet'. Status thing apparently.

Dick Blick Art supplies has some interesting storage cabinets but not as nice as the one in the original post.
