My brother lives in WNC near Dillsboro at around 2500ft elevation. These trees are growing around his house but no idea what they are. The first two pics are of the same tree and the next two pics are of what appears to be a different species already split into firewood. Can anyone definitively id either or both of these?
Thanks for any help you may provide.

First are the leaves:

Next is the bark:

This firewood appears to be a different species:

Same firewood without bark:

Yep sassy but I can not id the firewood.

I've made root beer twice with sassafras root. There are lots of recipes on the net. The first time not so good the second time was acceptable and much better.

Thanks for the replies, all. Looks like the consensus on the tree is sassafras but some hesitation on the firewood. I will pass the info on to my brother. If anyone has other opinions on what the firewood is, I would appreciate hearing it.
Best regards to all.
