Too much play in vise screw

I attempted to make a twin screw vice (not synchronized like lee valley) using a couple of vise screws, but the outer face has too much play and doesn't hold boards that aren't very deep well. One thing I did wrong was I didn't taper the the outer face. I have now fixed that, but I would still like to remove some of the play. It looks like there is quite a gap between the tee handle and the flange that screws into the face. I'm not very mechanical so this is where I am asking for advice.

I think I can remove the tee handle by knocking out the spring pins and adding or replacing another washer between the handle and the tee. Is there anything special I'm going to need to re-insert that spring pin?

Boy, I'm not sure I got much useful advise, but am very interested in your post!

For my own reference, is this what you are discussing?

I'm a bit unclear on where you are seeing the play.

Here's a better view of the play and spring pin. BTW, Thanks lee valley, just the picture I needed.
