This is my new student making her first box.
starting from rough wood, using the fore plane to flatten one side.

Interesting pictures of her "learning" although she looks like she has had some woodworking experience. How did she find you to show her how to "make a dovetailed box"?

Keep up the WIP pics as she comes along.

She is a friend of my daughter, and she took a bowl turning class last month.
She has never done woodworking before. Learning from scratch.
She has worked in clay and turned clay bowls on a wheel.
I hope those quotation marks don’t denote sarcasm or doubt.

Her only experience is what I have shown her, she is learning very quickly.

Sounds like a 1 in 100,000 person. That's awesome. Always a joy to teach those whose mind takes to the concepts and has the innate tool skill to go with it.

Always encourage younger people to learn new skills, especially ones requiring work with the hands. I am still trying to get my 3 teenagers interested in learning and working with their hands be it turning, buildling with wood, or anything really.

We finished the dovetail box this week and she is headed home for the holidays.

Will start a new project in January/February.

Very first hand cut dovetails EVER! And on the first try, no practice except for learning to saw. I marked a board with square lines and angled lines and she practiced cutting for about one hour.

And this is her finished box, designed, built and finished almost entirely by her with only a little help and lots of talking/instruction from me.

Great result there on the box. Really like the dark splines in the lighter wood of the top.

BTW, What size are those holes in your assembly table - look to be about 1/2".
