A forgotton tool for sure, though most of your problems were probably using too small of a drill bit. That can be a pain needing a couple of bits to step the hole with the tapered wood screws. I tend to use metal screws for that reason.

Another remedy to that is to use the tapered countersink bits available for wood and MDF.

Ha, my dad taught me the soap trick 50 years ago, always had a bar on his workbench when he was making wooden purses for my mom (mahogany usually)

Was thinking. What is the advantage of the tapered wood screw? Is it a holdover from manufacturing in previous centuries?
