Habitat store in Raleigh has a crate of 4"X5' marble back splashes for $5.00 each. Just the perfect surface for mounting sandpaper for sharpening chisel, plane irons, and flattening bottom of newly aquired planes. A cheap (less than $20.00) diamond blade from Lowes, mounted in a circular saw, could be used to cut into more managable pieces.

Go to a countertop shop that deals in custom tops (Corian) ect. They throw away the sink cutouts. They will usually give them to you for free
