condition: excellent
make / manufacturer: Jet lathe
model name / number: Model 1642 2hp
This is a Jet 1642 lathe which means it will swing a 16" bowl and turn a 42" spindle. It is no longer manufactured which is a shame because the lathe that replaces it; the model 1840 is inferior. Turning lathes need to weigh a LOT because even a slightly out of round blank can cause a lathe to walk across a room. The 1840 is lighter by 150 lb. and has a 1/2 hp smaller motor. That 150lb is less iron and steel which makes the lathe weaker.
One of the things that is painful to discover in turning is that a lathe is only the beginning. You will need high speed steel turning tools and sharpening tools and a Nova chuck and lathe accessory tools and, measuring tools and.....you get the idea. Now add in the taxes and a new lathe will cause $1000 more! If you wish to buy EVERYTHING you need, buy this!
If I was to find fault with my lathe it would be that it needs WD40 and a really good rag wiping down. The HSS tools are all sharp and it comes with disposible carbide turning tools also.
