A couple of planemaking opportunities are coming up for August at the Woodwright’s School, which you all might be interested in.

Make a Traditional Jointer Plane. August 21-23 (Sunday through Tuesday). Tuition is $395 and materials are in the range of $115. We will make a 28: beech jointer in the style of Edward Preston, a large and prolific English plane and tool maker in the 19th century. The body will be quartersawn beech, the handle and strike button will be locally harvested black walnut. The blade will be an O1 steel blade, single iron. You should have some facility at laying out and cutting to a layout line. Other than that, all skill levels are welcomed.

Molding Plane and Forged Iron. August 27-321 (Saturday through Wednesday). Tuition is $655 and materials are in the range of $65. This is a joint workshop taught by myself and Peter Ross, noted blacksmith and whitesmith and formerly the head of blacksmithing at Colonial Williamsburg for 25 years. Students will make at least 2 or possibly more planes in quartersawn beech, and will forge the blades for these planes as well. This will be a great opportunity to have a hand in every aspect of planemaking. Attention to detail, the ability to work to a layout line, and some skills with chopping with a chisel is necessary. Other than that, all skill levels are welcome.

If you are interested, go to the website for the Woodwright’s School (http://www.woodwrightschool.com) and register for these classes.
