Photo Finish Dilemma

Our kiddo showed me two of his pieces that have had underlying levels exposed.
One from condensation, another from thieves oil.
Both appear to have a photographic wood graining applique, because,
the substructure is monochromatic, as in "pressboard" or particle board.
I would appreciate suggestions for coloring and applying a protective finish.

Would building a new piece of real furniture be too much?

I mean the whole point of pressboard furniture is to throw it away when it gets banged up.
