Padauk Box

One of my pen customers asked me to make a box for his upcoming 5th anniversary, wood being the "traditional" gift for year 5.

I came up with a padauk box with ebony splines (5 on each edge). I put some inlay banding (sourced from fellow NCWWer Matt Furjanic) on the top, along with some contrasting maple on the center top. I made a padauk tray that lifts out, and flocked the bottom of the tray and the box. I installed some SOSS barrel hinges and a small full mortise box lock. Finished with danish oil and buffed with carnuba wax.

The project as a whole was a great learning experience: first time doing splines, inlays, flocking, and a full mortise lock. Had to build a few jigs and get some new tools that should serve me well in future projects.

ow James, that box is awesome! And to think you did this without spinning it!;) That is truly an heirloom piece for your customer.
