So I got out the big cabinet scraper and went to work. About 20 minutes later it looked almost new again.

A hand plane would take off too much material, I only needed a hair.Just curious- why not use a regular hand plane? Personal preference or any specific reason? (Actually I’m wondering if I need one of those)

Washing the windows won't help, they need to be replaced.Geez Mike, what are you going to do next? Wash your windows, polish your door knobs, and spit shine your work boots? BTW that "big cabinet scraper" is the perfect tool for that job. A plane or belt sander would have taken off more than necessary, and the scraper leaves a smoother finish than sanding.
