Need A Local Sawyer and Sawmill, Orange and, or Wake County Area, NC.

I am looking to source some local true 7in by 7in by 8ft rough sawn cedar timbers ( or any appropriate cedar ) to replace on a front porch awning. They will be painted. If possible I need them stabilized and ready for installation. Maybe local Eastern Red Cedar. I am an ex-union carpenter from the city of NYC and just recently moved to the piedmont of NC. I am a city carpenter and learning some new qualities to the tradecraft. Rustic is slightly outside my wheelhouse.

The caveat is: its to make market ready a house for a friend's widowed uncle, so bringing a finished product to market quicker rather than later seems better to me.

Any ideas would be appreciated! Thanks in advance.

JAMES, if you utilise a locally grown rough sawn Weather resistant species, such as eastern red cedar, Atlantic white cedar, or Cyprus, your challenge is going to be finding dry material suitable for painting.

There are several somewhat local Sawyers that specialise in Cedar and Cyprus, including Josh Smith in Moncure and Elijah Rogers in Wadesboro, but your problem is going to be obtaining kiln dry material.

Have you thought about using pressure treated six by sixes and then adding a 1” rough sawn cedar or Cypress board on the outside to get the look that you desire? You should be able to Source kiln dried western Red cedar from any of the major Local lumberyards.
