Friend of mine has a place in the mountains not far from this school and visited it once. Brought home a catalog. This school looks awesome with tons of craft related classes. I'm seriously thinking of taking one of their advanced turning classes. What better way to spend a week vacation then turning, learning from the experts, and spending time with other turners. They also have several blacksmithing courses, which is something I've always been interested in but haven't tackled yet. I think I may have just planned all my vacations for the next 5 years. :gar-Bi

Hey Rob... I'm right there with ya'. Local Turners Frank Penta and Alan Leland teach there as well as many others. It sounds like a great school. I'm going as soon as I can get some time.

Heard of the "Oland tool"?
While in the area, you may try to swing by Bidstrup Acres where Lissi Oland still lives, and her late husband Knud 'invented' the Oland tool.
Lissi has a website that is most interesting. She's a fascinating lady and outstanding turner in her own right!

Bob, Alan Leland was my instructor at the Klingspor class I took. Great instructor, really liked him. But he's a spindle turner, and I'm more interested in learning more bowl techniques. I'm looking at doing a class in May, "Bowl Shapes and Hollow Forms" by Joe Ruminski. That will give me enough time to save up the PTO and cash needed.

The new turning studio at John C. Campbell School is incredible -- A group of us from the Western NC Woodworkers Association visited there a few months ago and the school is a very vibrant center for learning. Go for it and document your experience.

You will enjoy the time at the folkschool. I spent the 1st week of June at the woodturning studio with Don Dudan (?spelling) and Doug Barnes(the resident woodturner).

It is an awesome studio!! Go for it!!!!!!!!!!!!
