I picked up a set of marking guides at a neighbors 'moving sale'. He said they came from Garrett-Wade, so I did some poking around and found them at:

http://www.garrettwade.com/double-45-degree-mitre-scribe/p/28K01ddd01/

What I found interesting was the note on the web page about the markings on these things:

"The metric markings on the edge are specific to particular Japanese methods of work and do not affect the utility of the angles for marking-out, which is the main use of this tool."
From playing around with them, I suspect the markings relate to laying out mortises and tenons of some sort.

Does anyone know what the "particular Japanese methods of work" mentioned on the Garrett-Wade site might be? Or where an english version of instructions for using these guides for more than marking 90/45 degree angles might be found?

Thanks,
Len

No clue, but you got my attention.

I've been using them for years, and never noticed the markings.

I also don't read directions, signs or warning labels. Which could explain a lot.

Looks like I found the answer to my own question. I finally tracked down the manufacturers website and found this:

http://www.shinwa-measuring.com/catalogue/p4.pdf

So it appears these these are exactly what they look like, saddles for marking 45 and 90 degree lines on wood. And the 15mm marking is approximately equivelent to 5 bu (that's what the symbol that looks like the Greek letter pi with two marks over it after the 5 in parens means), which is used quite a bit in Japanese building carpentry.
