How far in to place table legs

I am buliding a patio table that is about 79" long. Is there any formula to determine how far in to set the legs or is it more of "what looks good"?

I, usually just go with what looks good. usually around 3" to the skirt boards on a coffee or end table with the legs showing 1/2-3/4" proud of the skirts. depends a lot on the height of the table. A dining table would be set back more IMO.
