Hello Ken,
When I was up living in upstate NY I had done several things with Hemlock. Its a soft wood but does well for exterior use. Its alot like working with pine.

I would make a distinction on the pine to be clear: it is like working with some white pine not yellow pine. The spruce I have worked with had more knots on average per board than the pine. If I have white pine or poplar for drawer sides I prefer those to the spruce.

Thank you all for your replies they have all been helpful. I saw an ad for someone in the Bahama area that had Hemlock for sale, I will definitely be checking to see if he has any available.

Where did you see the ad? Bahama is just a few miles from me and there is a sawyer there but I don't know if he posted the ad.
