I picked up some misc boards this weekend and I am hoping someone can help identify the species. I purchased these boards at an estate sale where the owner worked on pianos and organs. Some or all of these may have benn intended for that use but the people at the sale did not know.

1. Walnut of some type
2. Depends if it is stained sycamore seems plausible, could be others if it is dense and heavy, then I would think one of the South American tree varieties of red type woods .......... in other words not sure.
3 and 4. Red or Black Oak, could be Red Gum, but that is also an oak.

1. is walnut
2. Without a shadow of a doubt that's sycamore.
3 & 4, my first guess would be red oak, white oak maybe, but I'd have to see the end grain.

Looking where the grain raises through the surface, I would posit that both three and four are of the red oak family. Because of the lack of pinkish color in #3, I would say possibly water oak. Either could be willow oak, also, with water oak very prevalent in the east and willow more prevalent as you go west in the state. I have had more experience with the water oak. The darker grain look of #4 tends to make me think it is not water oak or southern red oak.
