I had my camera out so I thought I'd post a WIP pic.

This is my first attempt at carving "in the round".
So far I'm pretty happy with how it's coming along but I have plenty of time left to mess it up!

Now that is going to be a nice piece. Don't know if I would put it at the foot of my bed but I like what I see so far.

Re: Grotesque carving WIP - Update 11-18

Progressing slowly, but progressing. I'm learning a lot and I'm pretty happy with it so far.
I think the arm and hand look pretty cool. Hopefully I can get the face to work as well.

(I put a little shellac on his head. It makes it easier for me to see.)

Looking good Pete! Are you going to put in any textures or keep it smooth? I look forward to seeing the finished work.

I have no idea!:dontknow:

The book I got the pattern from has a finishing method to simulate old stone but I'm not sure I want to go that route. I was thinking about cutting scales down the back. I'll probably try a few different ideas on scrap before I decide.

Wow, the hand came out fantastic, doing fingers is tough! What did you do, copy your own hand? Do the same with the face and it will come out grotesque like want :rolf:

:eusa_clap :eusa_clap :icon_thum Can't wait to see the finished product.

I enjoyed carving this and learned a lot in the process.
I think I'll be doing more gargoyle/grotesque/chimera type things!

My wife has said that you should probably just give that to her for safe keeping so no one gets hurt:rotflm:
Now seriously That is a really cool piece of work you have done there.

Thanks Mark
