Thanks everyone! I enjoyed making this, and I expect more in the future. I designed it with a free online program:
https://cdelker.bitbucket.io/segbowl/ Cool little tool, but has limitations (the major one being that you can't save anything and come back to it). I'll probably invest in some software down the line, but this was helpful to get me started. Also helpful was Malcolm Tibbet's book on segmented turning I got from the library.
After failing on my first ring using my miter guage (which I was expecting, but tried anyway), I went ahead and built a wedgie sled using this video as a guide:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hpFNE1CHsc4 After I built that, it was no problem. I don't have a drum sander, so I mounted a 10" sanding disc to some plywood and attached it to the faceplate of my lathe to sand the rings flat.
Charlie - Seeing your work on here was in part what inspired me to give it a try. You make some phenomenal stuff! One of these days I'm going to sign up for one of your workshops - I had conflicts with the dates, and Raleigh is a bit of a drive, but I'll make it someday! (I'll have to think of a good bribe for my wife for leaving her alone with the kids
)
sawman101 - great meeting you at the picnic last week. Thanks again for organizing it. Looking forward to next year's!
