Hi,

Been carving a few spoons and enjoying it. My wife wants a spoon she can use to stir her tea in the morning. Is there any non-toxic finish that can handle that kind of heat? Would linseed oil or walnut oil do any good?

Thanks.
Dan

Flax seed oil from the health food store, if you really get busy with spoons then you can buy a quart mail order from the internet.

i have one spoon that I made when we first got married over 30 years ago, never had to refinish it.

it will take 4-5 good soaking rub in coats.

Flax seed oil = raw linseed oil. If your wife is not allergic to nuts then Walnut oil from the local grocery store works fine too.

OTH, what kind of wood for this tea spoon and why does it need a finish of any sort? The tannic acid from the hot tea is going to provide it's own character.

Flax seed oil = raw linseed oil. .

You won't find it listed that way in any of the local health food stores, that's the easiest place to get small amounts.

Oil marketed as raw linseed oil often has other additives.

Both flaxseed oil and linseed oil are extracted from seeds of the plant Linum usitatissimu. Flaxseed oil is pure and fit for human consumption; linseed oil goes through a refinement process and may contain additives that improve its paint-cleaning properties. Never drink linseed oil. Instructions on flaxseed oil packages will indicate if it is drinkable.

Thanks for your help. I guess I figured hot water would dry it out quickly with use or any oil might leach into the tea affecting the taste. I'm fine with 'tannin character' too!

Fine points that don't equate to measurable human toxicity other than a knee jerk response like "but it's not organic and not natural"! Bs.

According to Dresdner.

As you probably know, raw linseed oil, sold as flaxseed oil in the grocery store, is edible and considered by some to be a health food supplement. To make boiled linseed oil, metal salts are added. They cause the oil to dry faster. While these render boiled linseed oil inedible, you’d have to consume a decent amount before it would be toxic. However, once the oil is dry, the metals are trapped in the film, making it perfectly safe for use on furniture.

Jeff,

You do what you want, I'll continue to use flax seed oil as I have for the past 30 years.

Even if oil finish X, Y, or Z leached a bit I doubt that a taste change would be noticeable and that would diminish with each use.

Carry on, I choose the fork in the road less traveled as an organic chemist with a history in pharmaceuticals and toxicity, not nutraceuticals. I was simply stating some facts for reference and all are free to choose their path. So it's akin to "Point" and "Counterpoint" fun.

Ask any doctor and they will say Cipro is perfectly safe, nothing to worry about.

UNLESS, you happen to be one of the few it affects badly.

So forgive me if my trust in pharmaceutical professionals is less than stellar after suffering the effects for over 15 years.

Find a piece of Teak and you won't have to worry about the finish. Have two teak spatulas that I have had over 25 years. Still run them through the diswasher to this day. No cracks............TEAK.
